Rox and Willmar Stingers guaranteed to meet in first round of playoffs

(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Rox won their third straight game on Sunday afternoon with a 10-6 win over the Waterloo Bucks. With Willmar dropping a close decision in Duluth, the team is once again ahead of the Stingers in the standings.

The Rox won Great Plains West in the first half quite comfortably, but no Northwoods League side have been better in the second half of the season than Willmar. Their 23-5 record catapulted them into a neck and neck race for the division’s best overall record with St. Cloud.

The Rox (45-17) and Stingers (44-18) both have six games to play. Willmar will play two more at home, but St. Cloud has an easier schedule. Left for the Rox are playoffs with Waterloo, the Minnesota Mud Puppies and Bismarck. These teams combined for fewer total wins (42) than the Rox managed on their own.

Willmar, by comparison, will have a road mapped out with LaCrosse and finish the regular season at home against Duluth, first-half champions Great Plains East.

Willmar and St. Cloud are guaranteed to meet in the first round of the playoffs. The three-game series will see the first contest played in the team with the worst final record. The top seed then gets Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) at home.

Although the Rox don’t know when their first playoff game will be at Joe Faber Field, tickets are already on sale on the team’s website.
