GMA claims leadership on TV, radio and online – Manila Bulletin
With its main rival off-air, broadcast giant GMA Network asserted its dominance in television, reaching 97% of the country’s total TV households with around 82 million viewers nationwide.
Based on January-September 2021 data from Nielsen Philippines, GMA’s TV household net reach in Total Luzon is 96.1% with approximately 54 million viewers; Total Visayas at 98.2 percent with 16 million viewers; and Total Mindanao at 96.9% with 12 million Filipinos.
In the rural Philippines, GMA reaches 97 percent of TV households with 36.4 million people while 96.3 percent with 45.4 million people are reached in the urban Philippines.
Additional data from MCTAM (Metro Cities TV Audience Measurement) also indicates that GMA reaches almost all TV homes in Metro Dagupan with a net reach of 99.5% (with 351,000 viewers), Metro Cebu at 97.9% ( with 2.3 million viewers) and Metro Davao at 99.4% (with 2.1 million viewers).
These key regional towns are reached by GMA’s regional TV channels which also have their respective local news bulletins. GMA-7’s reach is complemented by the free second GTV channel.
Abroad, viewers can watch GMA through its international channels GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV as well as GMA On Demand.
GMA and GTV’s combined news programs in Total Philippines reached 95.8% of TV households (with 80 million viewers nationwide).
This was well ahead of the combined reach of news programming among its current competitors – TV5, CNN Philippines and A2Z, which recorded a total net reach of 69.3% (with around 49 million viewers).
In addition to having the broadest on-air news coverage across the country, GMA Network also achieved the highest brand trust score with 74% according to the 2021 Digital News Report (DNR) published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
As of July 2020, GMA’s flagship stations continue to dominate AM and FM stations in Mega Manila. As Nielsen’s latest radio audience measurement (RAM) data shows, Super Radyo DZBB 594 recorded 38.6% audience share for September 2021, beating its closest competitor, DZRH, which posted 32 , 5%.
DZBB’s cumulative reach was 2.09 million listeners, with 87% of listeners remaining loyal to the station during the month.
Meanwhile, GMA’s three YouTube channels surpass 10 million subscribers, the GMA network has 25 million Facebook subscribers, 1.9 million Instagram subscribers and 1.5 million Twitter.
Additionally, GMA News and Public Affairs has over 100 million subscribers across all social media accounts.
Based on the Reuters Institute’s 2021 DNR, GMA News Online – along with the GMA Network – enjoys the greatest reach among Filipino media. It recorded 53% weekly usage, ten points higher than ABS-CBN News Online’s 43%.
